Hugh Allen Ward, age 85, died Tuesday, September 12, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was born February 9, 1938 in McLean County, Kentucky to John Henry and Ollie Lou Kittinger Ward. On October 31, 1996 he married Jana Runnion in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Hugh grew up in Calhoun, Kentucky where he graduated as the valedictorian of his high school. He earned his Master’s Degree in Engineering from the University of Kentucky before entering the US Army, serving in the Corps of Engineers. He was assigned to Thailand where he directed the building of roads, runways and bases during the Vietnam Conflict. After his honorable discharge, he worked as a civilian with the Corps. This experience brought him to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) where he directed the disaster relief for many National Disasters including debris removal from the World Trade Center Attack on 9/11. He directed the training for many colleagues and was a respected mentor.
After relocating to Logandale, Nevada in 2002, he enjoyed cultivating his pomegranate orchard and caring for his horses and peacocks. He was an avid Kentucky Wildcats fan and loved to talk about their basketball and football teams. His sense of humor and his story telling will be remembered and missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife, Jana of Logandale; four sons and one daughter: Rick (Marla) Ward of Paris, KY; Jon Whisler of Camino Island, WA; Colleen Dove of Richardson, TX; Gary (Georgina) Whisler of Las Cruces, NM; Greg (Indri) Whisler of Bellevue, WA; eleven grandchildren; three great grandchildren and one brother, John Kenneth Ward of Lexington, KY.
