Robert Hughes “Bob” Cronshey was born in Utica, New York, and passed away peacefully at home in St. George, Utah. The only child of Floribel and Richard Cronshey, he grew up in San Marino, California, where he developed a lifelong love of the outdoors and proudly earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
A graduate of South Pasadena High School, Bob was drafted into the U.S. Army shortly after his 18th birthday and served bravely in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He completed infantry training at Camp Roberts, California, before being deployed to Hawaii for jungle training. Assigned to the 96th Infantry Division, Bob fought in combat on Okinawa beginning May 1, 1945, with Company E, 2nd Battalion, 381st Regiment. He remained in the Pacific through the end of the war, later serving with the 86th Infantry Division in the Philippines under General MacArthur before returning home in late 1946.
After the war, Bob studied architecture and engineering at Pasadena City College, the University of Oregon and the University of Southern California.
In 1956, he married Rosemary Louise Chase, with whom he shared 45 years of marriage and two children, Elizabeth and Richard. Bob built his career operating a Los Angeles Times franchise before retiring early to Logandale, Nevada where he pursued his passion for thoroughbred horse breeding and racing.
A devoted aviator, Bob earned his instrument-rated private pilot’s license at a young age and owned several airplanes, including Bonanzas. He later co-owned a Beechcraft Debonair with two partners and served as a Civil Air Patrol Captain at El Monte Airport, where he flew the T-34. He also enjoyed flying gliders, taking desert camping trips with his children, and countless adventures in the High Sierras hunting, fishing, and camping. Deep-sea fishing was another of Bob’s favorite pursuits.
Bob was a proud Freemason, following in the footsteps of his father, uncles, and grandfather. He will be remembered for his generosity, decisiveness, adventurous spirit, and deep devotion to his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Rosemary. He is survived by his children, Elizabeth (Larry) and Richard; five grandchildren, Sam, Nicholas, Ryan, Ashley (Ryan), and Jake (Mariel); three great-grandchildren, Madelyn, Lucy, and Jackson; and bonus grandkids, and bonus great-grandkids.
